The Importance of Pet Dental Care

How does Dental cleaning works?

Dog and cat dental cleanings are very similar to human dental cleanings, except that we are required to use anesthesia to properly and safely examine and clean the teeth.  We do physical exam to access general health, brief oral exam and perform appropriate lab work prior to schedule the dental cleaning. On the day dental cleaning, dental scaling and polishing is performed under general anesthesia during which the pet is constantly being monitored both manually and with state-of-the-art electronic monitors. After the cleaning, our veterinarian performs a thorough oral exam and check for signs of disease like gum loss, root exposure, or pockets around the root.

Very similar to human dentistry, we do full mouth X-ray as 60 % of the tooth disease lies underneath the gums. Dental X-rays enable our veterinarian to identify potential issues such as tooth root infections, abscesses, or hidden dental fractures which are not visible on oral examination alone. With this advanced imaging technology, we can accurately diagnose dental problems and provide targeted treatment plans for your pet.

Tooth extractions

We make every effort to save teeth that we feel have a chance to be successfully treated but, in many circumstances, periodontal disease is so advanced that treatment without extraction is unsuccessful. We only extract teeth that in our doctor’s opinion are beyond saving or has a serious pathology which can cause pain, infection or other complication in the future. Some teeth in the oral cavity requires oral surgery so that can be safely removed from the oral cavity. Our veterinarian has extensive experience and training to these oral surgeries. Pain management is very important aspect after oral procedure. We administer pain medication in the hospital and provide medications for at home care too.

Home Dental Care Education
